Corpus. rise up. support the scene. make 2012 count. stop going to the hood rat-dance clubs-DJ infested-pool halls-haters balls-nasty nates-newest bar in town-ghetto hopping-pimple popping-flea market mixer-douchery-sing off- dance off- karaoke irish pub. support live music. not just that once a month national touring act, support the guy you went to school with, the one you work with, the guy who delivers your pizza, or the one you hired to be your laywer. your girlfriends little brother, your hairdresser, your bartender, the guy who sold you that guitar or the one that use to own a venue and is now a federal manager..and im talking to the musicians as well. the ones i see every where but shows. dont just go for your band, support the bands before you and after you. you use to be able to book local bands every night of the week. use to be able to find great music in every bar. tell your local drinking establishment you want some local, live, and original music. if the world is going to end, go out with a bang and not dubstep.

best of 2010
doms top list of 2010
top 15 films 2010 (more like notes then a review)
1. In the attic. this czech film directed by jri barta really was the better “toy story” of the year. i got to see this wonderful little film at fantastic fest and it blew me away. hard to describe, it is a stop-motion film which took years to get mad, and if you ever get to see it, you will know why. this movie is a great adventure which reminded me of my childhood, and making something out of nothing in the imagination. yes this really was my favorite film of the year.
2. Exit Through the Gift Shop. if you have streaming netflix, watch this documentary asap. after you watch it, google it, but not before. i had the pleasure of seeing this film in the summer on the big screen. i remember the cashier at the theater asking me what it was about, cause no one had seen it yet. i would say its about documenting a thriving (while vanishing) artform.you decide.
3. Black Swan. everyone could not stop talking about this movie after it screened in october at austin film fest. even though i liked the wrestler, aronofsky’s first two films are still my favorite. i remember walking out of ‘requiem’ at dobie mall and remembering how emotional i felt. this movie was almost on the same level, but had its own unique tale that cant be compared to any other film. natalie portmans best performance of her career.
4. the social network. i think this is the movie i enjoyed watching the most this year. it makes you feel like you could have thought (or stole) something so simple and partnered up w/ justin timberlake (j/k) to be the a hole of the decade. i feel so bad for Tom. RIP myspace. i got to see jesse eisenberg and arron sorkin at the drafthouse for a special screening before the movie came out. aaron sorkin gave great A’s in the Q&A.
5. The Kids Are All Right. everyone is giving props to annete bening, julianne moore, and mark ruffalo but i thought mia and josh where the stars of the film. this movie is what america is becoming, and how families either traditional or nontraditional, are flawed and have there own struggles. to each his own, great incite on a 21st century family.
6. the Kings speech: this movie is great because its based on a true story about king george VI, even if it didnt happen the way it was written. both lead men give great performances as does the rest of the cast. americans are numb to history, and one of the great things about this movie, is that most of us in the states had no idea about how this king came into power. now we know. knowledge is power.
7. never let me go: great piece of fiction makes a great story. i am sure the book is far superior as are 99% of books that movies are based on, but as never reading the book i found this movie to be awesome and inspiring. andrew garfield is going to have a great film career not because of the social network, but because of his performance in this movie. sci-fi and reality are becoming more of the same thing these days, i would hate for the topic of this book to ever become reality.
8. scott pilgrim vs the world/ Kick Ass. its a tie. both films feel so closely related to each other in my opinion. kick ass was shown at SxSw last year, and i wasnt sure why, untill i saw the film. chloe moretz as hit girl -stole the show. (she was also great in the let the right one in- remake). SP vs world is just an awesome time, as is the music, and characters.
9. Micmacs. its hard to out do Amelie. this movie wasnt able to do that. but it was a great movie, a great story, and one of the few films of the year that put my mind in a dream world. i loved the sets, clothing and how crazy all the people were. we need more french films like this to come to the states.
10. Blue Valentine i didnt think this one would make it in my top 10, but after replaying the movie in my head, it made it. barely. its so hard to not think of heath ledger during the movie, and how people said he treated michelle williams. or maybe thats just me. i would have picked cupids room, and my story would have went a different direction i guess. two great performances, but there could have been alot more to the script.
11. Greenberg. people forgot about this movie. they just want ben stiller to shut up and do zoolander 2 i guess. squid and the whale is still my favorite baumbach film, but i loved that i could really identify with the main character. jennifer jason leigh is the reason to see this movie. i am glad noah put her in another film.
12. Inception. i dont have to say anything about this film. its what it is. everyone saw it.
13. catfish. i was able to see an early screening of this film before commercials came out and ruined it, and i am glad i went into it blind. everyone came out of the film saying wtf.... my wife liked it so much, she went back a few days later to watch it w/ the director and other guys in the film.
14. Cyrus i think i liked this movie more for the Q&A that the cast had during sxsw then for the film itself. john c riley playing john c riley and jonah hill playing jonah hill worked is some weird overweight kind of way.
15. True Grit. i honestly think that the girl in the movie should get nominated for an oscar. she did a great job among hollywood giants such as The Dude playing the The Duke. matt damon should be banned from hollywood for his acting in the film.
Biggest let down: Somewhere. saw this film in december. had been waiting for it forever. i should have known. ive watched lost in translation a few times, and still do not appreciate it, even though i am a huge fan of bill murray and sofia. i think this is the wost movie of her career, and that really sucks cause i really wanted stephen dorf to get some recognition.
not going to review music this year besides listing my top 10 albums. wont go into details on each album. if you have never heard of some of these artist, youtube them. if you like what you hear spend a few dollars on some mp3s. i am surprised that my top 2 artist are r&b since i dont listen to the genre thanks to the crap pop radio plays. yes i am talking about rihanna, nicki minaji, etc etc etc. i had a hard time listening to music in 2010. i didnt add much to my ipod that i liked. i will say the people listed below did put out some great albums, and it was refreshing from all the dribble that is on the radio these days. support public radio, in Austin 90.5

1/2 year 2010. movies. music
my half year top 10 favorite movies so far. i say that realizing 3 have not came out, but since i have been to press screenings for them, they are on my personal list and not by actual date of 1st 6-7 months. this will probably change, since most indie movies do not come out till the fall, and that usually crushes my list. i think this list is more of how they came out this year, and not which is my favorite. i will say that ‘exit through the gift shop’, ‘greenberg,’ and ‘the kids are all right’ are probably in my top 3. also listed are some highlighted albums of the year. this list is more of a personal reminder for me to keep track of as the year goes on. i am not leaving any notes as i usually do for each movie or album. i will say for the music though, listen to janelle monae. she is intense, incredible, and at the next level. got to see her w/ outkast at sxsw in 09. great stuff.

best of 09
Here is my top of the pops list for 2009 including film, music, and more. Like last year I waited till I saw every movie I wanted to see w/ one or two exceptions. Last year I didn’t see the reader till after I wrote my top list, and it would have made the list. This year I have not seen hurt locker & a few others. Oh well. Here we go. (note: I did not edit this yet. So yeahhhh)
Dom
------------------------------------
Top 5 trips in 09
5. went to Vegas w/ traci and a group of friends.
4. had one of the best birthday weeks ever in NYC.
3. took a road trip from California and vegas w/ my mom
2. Road trip in florida. Miami. Orlando, tampa. Beaches. Disney world, and old friend/casinos
1. Wimberly tx. For obvious reasons.
-------------------------------------
Top 5 somewhat highlights on 09
5. Started to paint and make myself a little art collection of my own work.
4. reconnected w/ a lot of old friends and visit them and have some visit me. and I got to plan and finally have a high school reunion.
3. was able to pay off ¼ of my house in one year
2. had a great music and film year 1st hand.. best sx ever. On sx staff. Also on Acl fest staff, aff staff, and vip at ffff
1. Married my one true love
------------------------------------
Film-/ my fav 20
You will notice that I have no honorable mentions this year. And that Avatar and Inglourious Basterds are not on my list… for good reason.
20. Funny people/ I love you man… tie tie tie. I had another tie, but I just moved one movie down and deleted the other. Funny people would have been a great movie if Adam Sandler and Seth rogan were not in it. Aziz and jonah did great. I love you man could have made the top 10 if RUSH wasn’t forced in my face every five seconds. Thanks c101 for making me hate rush so much.
19. Away we go. Maggie G was the standout in this movie. Great story about people like me.
18. zombieland. Cult classic already. Best cameo of the year. Jesse Eisenberg was in 2 great movies this year, and this one of them.
17. Brothers. Natalie portman needs to make more movies. She was awesome w/ jake and spidey. Yes. That was spidey in my head the whole movie.
16. The box. F everyone who doesn’t like this movie. This was no Donnie darko, but it was a great story and it got pretty crazy. I love crazy. I am crazy.
15. Worlds greatest dad: if you do not know who Bobcat Goldthwait is, I feel sorry for your mother. If you do, he wrote and directed this twisted and dark comedy about how messed up families are these days.
14. Adam: a story that put a somewhat spotlight on Asperger's Syndrome and how it is to live w/ it and fall in love. movie was under the radar.
13. Cloudy w. a chance of meatballs: best animation film since toy story 1&2. If you are a fan of HIMYM, the guys who wrote this, made that famous.
12. Messenger. Just one of 3 movies I liked this year that woody Harrison was in. got to meet him at this premier. Good movie., good story in these times of war. And jena malone was in it. Come on. i mean. come on..
11. Young victoria. So these are not real reviews but little notes if you have not guessed that yet. Emily blunt did an excellent job in this movie that showed us love in a land long long ago.
10. 500 days of summer: whats not to love about this movie besides the ending. Zooey and joseph (see him in brick if you havnt) in the same movie. My hearts on fire. Ill probably see this movie again and again more then any other movie of 09
9. The road. The most depressing movie I have seen since requiem for a dream. don’t watch if you are suicidal or very depressed. this might put you over the edge
8. The hangover. Best comedy of 09. I have told people for years (seriously, years) that zach G is awesome. Now everyone thinks they discovered him.
7. Where the wild things are: my most anticipated “movie of 09 that was not a let down”. that make sense? Everything I wanted and more. Thank you baby jesus, and spike jonze.
6. Precious: I think Mariah carey’s mustache should get an oscar for this movie. Not her though. She sucked. Monique came around right at the end to deliver a great performance. The kids in the class made the movie
5. adventureland: same kid from zombieland making anotherland movie. (see him in the squid and the whale for his best performance). This movie reminded me of HS way too much. Great cast including martin star.. (minus kristen stewart)
4. Gigantic. Came out here in june 09, I think it might be listed as 08 for some reason. Paul dano. zooey. Crazy script, in a fairytale like world. I loved it.
3. Up in the air: Jason reitman gave a great q&a at this premier. I thought it was better then his last movie (juno) but not as good as thank you for smoking. Not a big clooney fan, but he did good in this one. The girl from rocket science was great as well.
2. Food inc: please please please watch this and think about what you eat and how you eat. If you live in Austin, we have so many great farmers markets and alt/ markets in this city. Love your food. Love how it grows. Love the earth. Love.
1. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. One of the most sane terry Gilliam movies I have seen, but it is still all terry all the time. Heath ledgers last performance and what may have killed him, they brought in johnny depp, collin ferrel and jude law to finish the movie, and it worked. 1st movie I liked heath in I might add. This movie is what it feels like to be an adult and dream as a child. Tom waits as the devil was indescribable.
------------------------------------------------------------
Music
15. Blood moon by apes & androids - golden prize. Maybe this didn’t come out in 09, but no one knew about it till 09. Its like Marylyn manson for dance.

10. Man on the Moon: The End of Day by Kid Cudi: I’ll have to admit, I saw kid cudi live before I knew who he was. I am glad that happened because now I am a fan.
9. Asleep in the Bread Aisle by Asher Roth: this white boy had my song of the summer. He makes me want to grow young and fuck shit up like I use to. Then I just get depressed. Remembering that I’m way past 21 and that all I have is my memories from that time in my life.
8. Manners by Passion Pit: I was telling everyone to get this album back in april before it came out in may, and by September I was bashing it. That can only mean one thing: its not good, its great. Right, tony the tiger. Right..
7. Sorry, Sorry (import) by Super Junior. Korean pop is where its at. 3rd album by this super group of handsome guys. Check out sorry sorry on youtube to get a taste of what this sensation is all about.
6. Troubadour by K'naan. The songs in this album are stories of survival in Somalia by a young kid who experienced civil unrest first hand. Every song is a unique story that gives you hope and tears. Listen to waving flag as you burn a candle for the people who grow up not knowing what the word peace feels like w/ war outside there front door.
5. Ce jeu ep by (pop up= in the states in 09) - yelle: this chick is crazy. She is like the French version of peaches. her music makes u bangin like up on the good and gravy.
4. MC’s Can Kiss by UFFIE. So the songs were all out in 09, but I think the album is getting released this year. Either way. Hot chick, pop the glock, and ready to uff came out in 09 and if you have not googled her, check out her crazy videos. She is the next lily allen but w/. the controversy of winehouse.
3. Ray Guns Are Not Just the Future by The Bird and the bee: so glad this album didn’t suck. I love love love the chicks voice and the put on a good show as well. I hope they never get any bigger so I can put them in my pocket and save them for some good times.
2. Grand by Matt and kim:. Daylight. Lessons learned and of course, Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare. This was a dance party USA>>>>
1. The Cricket's Orchestra by Meaghan Smith: I know, has to be one of my fav songs of 09. She is awesome. Her music is awesome. This album was awesome.

Tom waits as the devil was indescribable.

back to my roots
in corpus this weekend. went back to a place i had not been in a long time. talked for awhile to a guy that helped me get my start/
it has been about 8 years give or take a month that i launched my career as a booking, and promotions person. i did not start my company for 3 more months, but this was about the time someone saw enough potential in me to give me what i needed to start what had been a dream of mine since i was younger. it was about this time that a venue owner, gave me all his booking, and let me the exclusive talent buyer for his club. i was still in school, didn't know much, and was lucky to have met the people i knew up to that point, mainly cause they drew in a crowd, and drank alot.
i think back to how many bands i gave there 1st gig, there last gig, the show that broke them up, and even those glorious reunion shows. i started my career at a metal venue, and didnt take any time to bring in rap, acoustic, punk, and other genres that probably have not played at this venue since i left.
so anyway, went back to this place after a long absence, saw a lot of friendly people still in the scene, a lot of friends still supporting music, and close friends that are musicians still doing what they do best by playing or supporting their friends. i dont get miss corpus much, but tonight was one of those nights that made me miss what i had created, what evolved, and what was still going on long after i moved away.
i have a few regrets, i wish i knew back then what i know now, but i wouldn't take the memories, the friends, the experience i had when i had it, for the world. i started a company, that still exist even if not through me, but through the shared experience of others. i am touched when someone tells me that i had an impact on there life, and that i gave them a positive experience at my own venue, or through some other event that i was a part of.
i appreciate the people who gained a positive experience in something that i started, promoted, produced, marketed, etc etc etc.
from my promotions and booking company to my recording studio and then my music venue, my goal has always been to support local and live music and i thank everyone that has ever helped.
thank u, thank u, thank u

wake me up when september ends
wake me up when september ends
finally back in austin for two days, and then i will be in new york city the rest of the week for my bday and much deserved food and entertainment.
between dallas, being in corpus for a week, and now new york, i haven't been home much this past month. since getting married in May, did a little traveling to miami, vegas, manhattan, cali, disney world, another trip to vegas, and one or two more trips i might be done w/ traveling for the year.
had a great homecoming and much deserved after being gone for the greater part of the last five years, even more after i closed my bar in corpus. which was kinda why i went back even though only about 3 people knew. to look into another business. i guess i am getting bored of sitting around for most of the year, maybe thats why i have been going out alot lately like i was 21 again. corpus has always been good to me, and it shocks me on how many people still remember who i am every time i go back, even if i surprised everyone by moving to austin and running my business from up here the last year and half it was open. i had good reasons, i lost some friends over it, made some new ones, but i am personally happier then i was before.
so now i am that guy that i wasn't a year ago, and didnt think i would ever be 5 years ago when i was in corpus. married, living in a house, great life, still acting like a kid. been writing again, painting, practicing standup, singing and playing guitar, and just being me. cali made me want to move there so much since i have always been interested in writing scripts, but that is not where i am at this point in my life.
been working on some stuff w/ equal eyez even if it doesnt seem like it to anyone outside of well i guess me.
i post new pix and keep up w/ people on facebook.com/dominixon more then here as do most people i know. twitter.com/dominixon as well
if you are in nyc this week, or gonna be around austin for acl fest the week after give me a call if you are interested in celebrating my bday.
cheers.
